Safety First: the practical uses of glow sticks

Safety First, Never last, Have a Future, Not a Past!

Glow sticks are not just for parties and fun, they are also practical solutions in emergencies, and are great ideas for bicycle safety, hiking, camping, and for children. Black outs, chemical spills, or any other issue that results in loss of power or the inability to leave one’s home should be reason enough to have a few glow sticks on hand. Organizing an emergency kit for times of unexpected crisis is not a trend widely followed in America, but with the Red Cross responding to more than 700,000 emergencies every year, this trend will hopefully be reversed. Even having a few glow sticks on hand in the office is great preparation for an emergency, and there’s no need to worry about batteries to keep your power source going.

Cyclists who are traveling in the dark usually have reflectors on their bikes, but for those nights or early mornings with heavy fog, rain, and low visibility, having a back-up glow stick on hand is a smart idea. In particular you could pick up the orange colored glow stick. Shoot for about 12" for extra visibility. Just attach one to your back pack or bike, and you can be sure that drivers on the road will spot you.

Taking glow sticks along camping is great for a little fireside party, as well as making sure the kids feel safe in their tents. If the adults are going to stay around the campfire while the kids head to bed, they may feel safe just having a little security light with them. And just in case you run out of batteries or lose your flashlight, you’ll be glad you brought along a few light sticks!

And if you're board with your glow sticks, or they are fading, you can actually burn them for extra glow and flare. We don't necessarily recommend the price since the burning plastics are potentially hazardous to your health, but we've seen it happen, and it's an eerie bright glow. It does lend to the fact that heating the chemicals in glow sticks will in fact speed up the reaction and make it glow brighter.

Kids love to play with things that light up, so why not make a safer choice during celebrations and give them glow sticks or flashing novelties instead? This safe replacement for sparklers on the 4th of July will be sure to please both kids and parents. You can increase the fun with your kids by flying a kite…at night! Attaching glow products to the kite will be fun for the whole family, and will create memories to last a lifetime.

For safety sake ensure you're in an open field and that the kite can handle the added weight. Attaching some flashing body lights may be a better bet since they are light and won't affect the flight of the kite.

Be prepared for any unexpected emergencies, and be safe with your kids! Fun and practical, glow sticks are a perfect addition to any event. Let us know your stories of you've found unique ways to use glow sticks and glow toys!
