Long Answer |
| Can I shut off a glow stick? |
Once a glow stick is activated the process cannot be stopped. However, you can slow the chemical reaction by placing the glow stick in the freezer. |
| Can the product be removed from the foil packaging? |
All products are sealed in air-tight outer foil wrappers. Liquid glow products are sensitive to humidity and light. Some more than others. Should the outer foil wrapper be damaged or the product removed from the wrapper and the product go unused for a few days, the light emission could be reduced. Left for longer periods, it is possible that the product could become totally deactivated. All products should be kept in their original undamaged foil wrappers until ready for use. |
| Does temperature affect the product? |
The chemical reaction in liquid glow products is influenced by temperature. As temperature decreases, light intensity decreases, but duration of light output increases. Liquid glow products are designed to produce their maximum light emission for their intended duration when used at temperatures of 60°-80°F (15°-26°C). If the temperature is above 80°F (26°C), the light will be brighter, but will last for a shorter duration. If the temperature is below 60°F (15°C), the light will be less bright, but will last longer. Lightsticks can be placed in a freezer to stop the chemical reaction. The light emission will re-start as soon as the product returns to ambient temperature. |
| How long do glow sticks last? |
Most products last anywhere from 4 to 12 hours, or longer after being activated. This is based on the size and type of product. Some products, such as the hi-intensity emergency sticks are designed to be effective for only 30 minutes after activation, but produce a higher intensity of light during that time. |
| How safe are glow sticks? |
Lightsticks light necklaces and other glow products are safe. The liquid light source is a non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-caustic, lightweight, windproof, light source. It is not a source of heat or sparks and is sealed within its own flexible plastic container. They are great for use in areas which may contain combustible mixtures of gasses or liquids, when ordinary sources of light might pose an explosion or fire hazard. The manufacturer has tested the products according to the regulations of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act and has determined that the products are non-toxic, nor a corrosive or irritant. They can be safely handled by children of all ages. |
| What is the shelf life? |
Studies have shown that if the original outer foil wrapper has not been damaged or the product removed from the wrapper, the products have a shelf life of one to four years, depending on the product. All industrial glow light sticks are expiration date stamped. Some novelty products are also date stamped. |
| What makes liquid glow products work? |
Light sticks and other glow items generate light when two chemical compounds are mixed together in a process called chemiluminescense. This process converts energy directly to light without heat, flame or spark. To keep the reaction from occurring prematurely, the two compounds are kept separate by storing one in a very thin capsule, which is broken by flexing or bending the product tube.
