Tips to Organize a Halloween Party

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Halloween parties are one of the popular holiday celebrations. They are fun and scary events. It takes an extra effort to maintain this scary and spooky feel all through the party. Starting with the preparing of invitations to supplying party favors, every single element of the party should be taken care of well in advance. Below are few tips which can help you in conducting a perfect Halloween party.

Prepare scary and spooky invitations: Give a perfect Halloween effect to your invitations. Use few scary and spooky designs. This brings the feel of the Halloween right from the beginning and extends to other aspects of the party. A well designed Halloween invitation generates interest in guests. Provide the details of the venue, place, theme, timings, costumes to be worn, etc. Customize the fonts and use scary backdrops such as haunted house, skeletons, grave stones, etc. to create a scary effect. Remember to maintain the color of the invitation in orange and black color.

Decorate using black and orange-colored items: Make the party venue as a frightening place. Decorate the venue mostly with black and orange-colored items. Hang orange lighted Jack O’Lanterns and black or orange-colored balloons all over the place. Decorate the roof tops and walls with orange and black streamers. Cover the party tables with black or orange table-cloth and place plastic bugs, rats and skulls. Be creative and make your own window and door coverings with the cutting silhouettes of bats, spiders, etc. out of black and orange paper.

Proper lighting: Proper lighting gives life to a Halloween party. This theme demands a shady and dim lighting in most of the areas. Use black and orange colored neon lights. Hang chandeliers or light up pumpkin spinning balls or balloons filled with mini glow sticks. Place a glow-in-the-dark skeletons or black–orange colored glowing zombies at corners in the room. Use artificial flashing light candles. Also, add artificial mist in places to create a smoky effect.

Arrange some scary games: A Halloween party can be made more lively, adventurous and really frightening by arranging some scary games. These games make the guests involved in the party as they give a real experience of a Halloween than any other visual decoration. Go for some games such as Haunted Halloween walk, Skeleton scavenger hunt, etc. Make sure that every guest present there participates in these games.

Serve festive Halloween drinks and food: Give a scary feel to your party by serving special Halloween recipes. In addition to general recipes, try ghoulish dishes and drinks such as zombie cupcakes, spooky Halloween soup, etc. Try serving them in dishes which are black and orange in color; it is better if they have scary designs. Glowing barware can be used for serving drinks. Use orange and black colored table cloths and place artificial objects such as bleeding hand, cross-bones, etc., as center pieces.

Offer surprising Halloween treats: Delight your guests by offering Halloween party favors. Surprise them with special treats such as glow sticks, Halloween masks, Halloween pumpkins with candies, flashing eyeball rings, glow necklaces, devil horns, etc. These treats add up to the already existing fun and excitement in the party.

Halloween is once in a year party. You can host a successful Halloween party by planning and organizing the event properly.

Unraveling the Attributes of a Good Party Host

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Everyone knows someone who is a great host. You go to an event hosted by this person and you enjoy being a part of it. It feels almost like the event was designed for your personal comfort.

In this article, I would like to examine if everyone can be a good host. In order to answer this, we need to study what it takes to be a good host. Hosting a good party needs many things. Firstly, it is not only about what you do at the party, but also about the preparation and planning to make it enjoyable for the invitees.

There are some who are great with planning but their party is boring. Something will be missing there – most significantly, the ability to understand the invitees, their tastes, needs and preferences. Once someone goes wrong here, attending such a party becomes a punishment to be endured rather than enjoyed. If you went to one such party, you can probably recollect the bad experiences from that event.

Then there are hosts who are more interested in inflating their ego rather than doing something that is enjoyable for their guests. They just do something flamboyant and celebratory – with the intention of causing people to be awestruck. They feel good being the center of attention. After all, the invited guests need to go up to them and greet them. In such events, you are just ready to hit the door as soon as possible.

The above situations outline what is not being a good host or hostess for the party. In the below section, we will look at the elements that make a good host (or hostess for that matter).

A good host keeps an eye on the trends in parties in the recent past. Invitees’ expectations are framed based on prior experiences. Also, vendors and suppliers gear up to provide services that support the popular services or items that are common across many parties. For this reason, having a pulse on the recent parties is an important element for pulling of a great party.

One element that is essential for ensuring the guests have a good time is to be aware of their preferences and tastes. More than your budget and event planning, this aspect needs to be taken care of well to ensure your guests have a good time. All good hosts have this awareness of what works for their audience. The ability to come up with common things that are liked by almost everyone in the party is a special gift that some people possess.

Above all, a host or hostess needs energy. To spend time with each person at the party and to be cheerful, happy and glad that they have come needs person with high energy and social skills.

In this article, we have so far looked at choosing the party theme, music and food based on the tastes of the guests and recent trends in parties. One aspect that determines the decision related to a party is the ‘list of constraints’. Weather, budget and number of people attending determine the kind of party that can be hosted. Good hosts are aware of the implications of such constraints and make smart choices under the circumstances.

If you have good awareness of the recent trends, know the preferences of your guests, have lot of energy but you are poor at planning. It is difficult to host a good party. Planning and organizing skills are absolutely essential for ensuring everything runs smoothly. Plus, if certain aspects of the party are taken care of before the party begins, there is lesser number of things to focus on during the party. If the preceding work was neglected, then it prevents a host from doing what they should be doing at that moment. It goes without saying, that bad planning will lead to many problems during the party and disturbs the mental balance of the host. In such a situation, not only is the host disturbed but it also dampens the mood of the guests.

It is quite obvious from the preceding paragraphs that being a good host is a special attribute that is not easy to possess or learn. In case, you have neither the time or if your personality is different from what is required to be good host, you don’t need to worry too much. All you need to do is to find a friend or acquaintance who can do this for you. Or hire an event organizer who will do this for you.

How to Set the Mood of Your Party

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

The success of any party lies in the lively participation of guests. The guests should leave the venue, happy and satisfied. Being courteous may not be enough always to make your party rock.

You need to get them into the party mood, which can be a difficult task. Each of guests will be in a different mood based on what went through them that day. If their day went fine, they will be in a good mood. But if they had a rough day at work, a clash in the traffic, an argument with spouse, or difficulty in finding parking lot, they cannot help but bring all that aggression along with them. They may be present in the party, but cannot involve wholeheartedly.

Some guests on the other hand, may be too timid to join the party. It can be a big challenge to deal with guests with all these mindsets and get them into the party mood. Here are few things which may help you set the mood of your party:

Music: Nothing can be as refreshing as great music in the party. There is an amazing relation between music and emotions of the people. Music is simple and subtle, yet it is a powerful way to change the party mood. If you want to trigger a wave of refreshing mood among your guests, start with some scores of pleasant music. Pick the scores based on the spirit of your party, environment and mood of the guests. Music is more effective when played at certain levels of volume and bass. So make sure to have somebody to constantly control the music player.

If you want to have an energetic dance environment, have strobe lights, lasers, fog machines and may be some video synchronized with your music. Make sure every guest is invited to dance. But do not push people who are unwilling to participate.

Lighting: If you are planning to arrange the party in the evening, consider proper lighting. Lighting gives life to a well-organized party. Your choice of lighting should align with the occasion, theme and venue of the party. However, too much lighting can spoil the mood of the party.

Decoration: You do not have to spend a fortune to have an elegant party decoration. Select an impressive theme and match the décor of your party with it. Whether it is a birthday celebration or a wedding reception, your decoration should be able to create an ambiance that matches the occasion.

Food: Food plays a major role in making a party memorable. People generally remember the food served in the parties. Just include a variety of delicious dishes and watch the magic it creates. Remember, delightful presentation of the food is also important. You should not overlook it.

Party favors: Don’t restrain the role of your party favors just to the gifts given as gesture of thanks. Chosen wisely, you can use them to take your party to the next level. Gifts make people happy. Use your creativity and choose gifts that bring joy to your guests. Surprising guests with party favors is one of the best ways to get them into the party mood.

Fragrance: Fragrances help in sparking the mood with an instant sensory pleasure. A good fragrance relaxes the brain and makes it calm and stable. Once you are done with the party arrangements, give a final touch with a good fragrance. Some natural fragrances like rose, jasmine and sandal work pretty well for all kinds of parties.

Many people in their attempt to create the right party mood spend on unnecessary things. They end up making the party look highly pompous instead of creating the required feel. Take care of the few basic elements of the party; the mood in the party automatically sets in.

Choosing the Right Party Theme

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Choosing a theme is probably the most important decision you’ll make while planning a party. A perfect theme not only sets tone to celebrate the event but also makes it easy to plan for the party. It determines the overall look and feel of the event or party.

Theme for a party is important

Any party can have a theme, no matter how simple the occasion is. A party theme makes it easy for you to choose party supplies, decorations, food, favors, etc. A wisely chosen party theme makes it easy for your guests to get involved in the party.

An appropriate theme reflects its scope throughout the party. It links with each and every component in the party. Even if all the components of the party are good but if they do not gel together they destroy the fun at the party. Theme is a common thread that flows through various constituents like party invitations, favors, décor, food and many others.

Invitations:

Themed invitations convey the guests that the party is going to be unique and interesting. The invitations should be designed in such a way that they directly relate to the theme of the party. For instance, funny images or cartoon characters can be printed on your kid’s birthday party invitation.

Decorations:

Decoration of the venue plays an important role in driving your party theme. Make sure that all items used in decorating the venue are matching the party theme. For instance, if you are planning for a glow-themed night party, choose glow sticks or other glow products like glow balloons, glow balls, etc.

Favors:

Choosing party favors can be quite confusing. Since your party already has a theme, party favors can simply be chosen based on it. This makes your guests more engaged with the party and its theme. Let’s consider a glow-themed night party again; you can give glow sticks, glow jewelry or other flashing novelties as party favors to suit the theme.

Food:

Delicious food takes party to the next level. If yours is an Indian themed party, you can include Biryani, Samosas, Rotis, etc. If it is a Hawaiian themed party, you can include pine apples and coconut food. However, if you are not able to make the menu unique, you can at least make your theme reflect in the utensils you serve food and drinks, costumes of the serving crew, decoration of the food court, etc.

No limit for themes

The list of ideas for party themes is endless. They can be cultural, humorous, colored, venue-inspired, glow themes and a lot more. They may differ for wedding parties, birthday parties, school parties, Halloween parties and so on. However, make sure that you choose a theme that is apt to the occasion. You can add any number of arrangements to the party as long as they are in sync with the theme.

Create a perfect party theme

Choosing from routine themes may not make your party interesting. Use your creativity to design your own party theme, which is original and unique. Design a theme putting yourself in your guest’s shoes to please and inspire them.

A good party theme need not necessarily be expensive. Choose a theme that you can best manage within your budget. It’s now your turn to host a party, make it memorable using a creative and attractive theme.

Hosting a Great Party – How to be a Good Host

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Many people have an intention of hosting a memorable party but they are clueless about how to make it a reality. Here are few things which you need to consider while planning for hosting a great party.

Require excellent organizational skills

Any party is characterized by the way it is organized. Successful parties involve careful preparation, planning and execution. So, take care of everything in advance, so that there is no last minute rush.

Take time to figure out everyone to invite

Make a list of all the people you want to invite. Remember, if you forget someone, they will not forgive you. Send the invitations two weeks in advance so that the guests will have enough time to plan and block the day for your event. The guests who need to travel long distances should be informed much earlier. Also remind them few days prior to the occasion so that they don’t forget the party.

Figure out the food and the drinks

Foods and drinks, after all, are the important factors for the success of the party. Prepare the list of food items according to your party theme and your guests’ preferences. If you are planning to hire a caterer, make sure that you book in advance as many of the good ones are often booked months in advance. Discuss about your menu and the number of guests you are expecting with them.

When it comes to drinks, make sure that you are clear on the number of people drinking and what is being served. Serve appropriate and responsible quantities of alcoholic beverages. Little alcohol can make people relax and have a good time at the party. Remember not to force guests to drink if they are not interested.

Music – an important element of the party

Many people overlook the importance of music in their parties. Music helps to set and maintain the right mood of the party. Music takes away the silence during the early stages of a party. Select the music which syncs with your party theme. It helps your guests enjoy the party.

Plan to accommodate your guests’ preferences

As a good host, you should know what it takes to make your guests feel comfortable, happy and special. Know their favorite food, drinks, music, etc. to make them feel comfortable. Try to accommodate as many of your guests’ preferences as you can in everything you do for the event. If not everything, at least include as much as you can. If you are not aware of their preferences, call your guests in advance to know about their likes. It may require little extra effort but it will really make your guests happy. Remember, if you like the party and none of your guests do. It is no fun.

You can come up with new ideas like handing them their favorite colored glow sticks or glow products as party favors.

Relax and sleep well the night before

You will need all the energy you have for the party; hence it is better to sleep well through the night before the party. Remember, you need to have relaxed mind to host a great party.

Take care of your guests – all the guests not only a few

As a good host, it is your responsibility to take care of all the guests who are invited. Greet your guests at the entrance as they arrive and welcome them in. Be very hospitable and take time for everyone. Some may need more attention and others less, but don’t ignore any one. Ask them if they are having good time. If you are distributing party favors such as glow sticks, glow necklaces, bracelets, etc. make sure that everyone gets at least one and none of them is deprived of them.

Plan for the socialization of the guests

Socialization is a good way to keep the party interesting for your guests. Remember, the more they interact with people, the more they will enjoy your party. Once they get started in the party mood, they are all set. All they need is someone who has been thoughtful and can be the catalyst. Introduce people who would like to meet each other or get the people together who are interested in a same topic or share the same experience.

Enjoy the party!

You should enjoy keeping your guests happy. This is a pre-requisite for others to enjoy your event. Your pleasant appearance and behavior sets the tone of the party. Be presentable and cheerful from beginning to end of the party.

Hosting a party can be difficult and stressful task. But if you are well prepared, the event will most likely go as per plan and your guests will remember it for a long time.
